The Audio Research Classic 30 is a highly regarded hybrid tube/solid-state amplifier produced between the late 1980s and early 1990s, aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts seeking high sound quality in a relatively compact design. The Classic 30 employs 6550 tubes operating in triode mode, with JFET input stages, a sophisticated bias control circuit, and overall solid build quality. Although rated at 30 watts per channel, most units deliver around 25 real watts under typical listening conditions.

Recently, a Classic 30 arrived in my workshop showing the following symptoms: one channel was not working, and there were intermittent contacts between the tubes due to oxidized sockets. After a targeted repair, the amplifier was restored to full operation.
Diagnosis and Technical Repair
The first issue found was the lack of output from one channel, later traced to an open resistor in the power circuit of that channel. Additionally, some tubes produced intermittent contact when moved slightly, caused by oxidation on the sockets. To ensure reliable operation, I performed a complete cleaning of all tube sockets and PCB pads, checked the mechanical tension of each contact, and replaced any loose sockets. After this electrical and mechanical work, the amplifier returned to perfect, stable operation.
Measured Performance
Once the repair was completed, I carried out several instrumental measurements:
- Maximum power: ~25 W RMS (consistent with real-world output despite the 30 W rating)
- Frequency response @ 1 Watt: 20 Hz – 0 dB / 50 kHz – 3 dB
- Frequency response @ 25 Watt: 20 Hz – 0 dB / 50 kHz – 3 dB
- Damping factor: not measured due to the circuit’s configuration and safety considerations
These results confirm that the amplifier was restored to excellent performance, fully suitable for demanding hi-fi applications.
Why Choose Professional Servicing?
Even high-end amplifiers like the Classic 30 require precise maintenance: oxidized components, deteriorated solder joints, out-of-tolerance resistors, or worn tubes can compromise both reliability and sound quality.
By entrusting your amplifier to an experienced technician, you get:
- Comprehensive and professional diagnosis (resistance checks, continuity, sockets, bias, etc.)
- Replacement with high-quality components and calibration to original specifications
- Thorough cleaning and socket restoration to eliminate noise and intermittent faults
- A guarantee of long-term reliability and restored sonic performance
Trust Your Tube Amplifier to Expert Hands
If you own a tube amplifier—whether a classic model like the Classic 30 or a different design—and you notice any of the following:
- One channel not working or sounding weaker
- Noise, crackling, sparks, or overheating
- Tubes losing contact or glowing irregularly
- Sound quality noticeably degraded over time
Don’t wait for the problem to worsen. Contact me for a complete inspection and restoration, and let’s bring your amplifier back to its best performance.
